Guard Dogs Scare The Bad People. The History Of The Guard Dog

By John E Adams

Guard dogs have been protecting people and property for as long as we can remember.

Guard dogs have the job of guarding or watching someone or something in order to protect the object from unwanted circumstances such as intruders, a thieve or even other animals.

Their history of the guarding dog is long and well documented. Originally bred to protect people carrying gold and precious materials, the dogs quickly grew in status.

Some communities have dogs that protect them as well as the live stock. They are as valuable and important as every member of the community

Guard dogs are now mainly used on personal property guarding his or her owner and their private property. They have also been placed in businesses to help protect ones investments and you may also see guard dogs or sentry dogs in place to guard livestock from predators such as coyotes.

Guard dogs, as well as watch dogs use their voices to warn their owners of intruders.

They will bark loudly to make people aware that someone is intruding or something is wrong and also to try and scare away the- would be thief. Generally a watch dog is trained to only alert the owner where as a guard dog is usually trained to attack and sustain the intruder.

Owners will train the guard dogs to keep their attack in the area of the intruder?s arms and legs. This can allow the dog to incapacitate the intruder but not to kill them.

If the intruder is an animal, the guard dog may be trained to fight off the animal in defence and to protect the property and its owner. The extent of the attack depends on how the guard dog is trained.

In most cases it is illegal to allow the guard dog to attack rather then restrain.

Certain breeds make better guard dogs and other make better watch dogs. The breed of Keeshonden have been said to make great watchdogs as they can easily be trained to bark loudly, warning their masters of an intruder but they lack the attack behaviour that guard dogs have.

Best Guard Dogs. Chose the right breed

Here are a few of the more commonly used breeds with the top of the pick for the best guard dogs.

Doberman, German shepherd, Saint Bernard, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Weimaraner, Bullmastiff and American Bulldog

You see you have a wide choice in breeds to choose from if you are looking for a guard dog.

One key thing to keep in mind when choosing a guard dog is that the female dogs usually make better guard dogs for you and your personal property. Many say this is due to their maternal instincts.

The male guard dogs are better used for guarding property as they are usually more territorial like the German shepherd.

When making a choice of what guard dog breed to go with, it might be good to decide exactly what and how you want the dog to protect then go with what breed matches that style the best.

For instance, you will not want a dog for your family that is not good with children. A dog like this would be better suited for property protection.

    Dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
I know, iknow, Everyone wants a dog but heres another story about someone wanting a dog. I want one and wanted to know what the average price for a girl dog is, for a boy dog is, for a girl puppy, and a boy puppy. But my dad wont let me have a dog because we live in Hawaii and we may move. But he and my mom both had dogs when they were a kid and they always told me one day i could have a dog how can i convince them that now or soon is the time.

      How old are you?

The prices are not based on gender, rather on breed and the reputation of the breeder. A responsible breeder vs. an idiot just trying to make some quick cash.

I would suggest you first go to a local shelter or dog rescue. They are free, they are vaccinated, fixed. Rescue groups will often help you with anything you need before and after you adopt the dog, they will make sure you and the dog are a good match. It’s like getting a free trainer!

should dogs be able to go on lunges. why
    lounge

    • Dog Lover says:

If you are referring to a lunge line, like they use with horses, yes. It allows the dog to expend excess energy. However, make sure you reverse the direction, to equalize the muscles used. It also has him out with you, and running without pulling.

    DOGS!!???!!!!????!!!!!!?
So i have a dog that I think is pregnant but i dont know. Do dogs continue their period after becoming preganat or do they stop like humans do for the time being???

    • Mont Kiara says:

Dogs stop their menses after pregnancy just like humans.
She will be pregnant for at least 3 months. Please make a thorough research and visit the vet for conformation.
A female dog is susceptible to many complications when she’s pregnant.
Sometimes, it mat also be caused by some sort of growth in her reproductive system.
My dog Tiffany had an inflamed fallopian tube and she didn’t go through her menses because of that.
It may be a myriad of things but the best option is still a visit to the vet.

How to teach big dogs to be considerate of small dogs size?
I have a great dane and am getting a small dog (12 pounds). He is very considerate of other dogs when socializing. But- just in case I would like to ask anyone who has a big dog and small dog how they got there big dog to be considerate (not step on, not bite, and to be easy playing) of the small dog. I would like to know about how people taught their big dogs that. Also I would like to ask how to introduce a big dog to a small dog. We are getting our small dog second, since we already have a big dog. Does that make a difference? Thank you.

I used to have two grooming clients. One a great Dane (who has passed away) the other a Papillon (still with me). The Dane used to sit and whimper at the Papillon sitting in his second story drying cage. One day the owner of the Papillon asked if it would be OK to put her little dog down near the Dane for a picture. She did and the Dane was so thrilled he immediately dropped into the play posture, inviting the little guy to play.
I have had several Danes over the years at the groom shop and have only ever seen the gentle side of these giants. A well socialized dog seem to always know what is appropriate to the size of the smaller babies.
Just make sure that you introduce your Dane to the new baby outside of the home and then take them both back home together. Never just drop a new dog of any size into a home where an existing pet has residence.
