How To Make A Dog Bed

By Jerry Brecken

Admit it! Buying manufactured dog beds these days may cost you a fortune no matter how fancy or eye-catching these products are.

The nice thing about it is that you just have to take your credit card, ATM card, or your hard-earned cash with you, then off you go to the nearest specialty shops that offer all sorts of dog beds. Also, you may just browse the Internet for websites that offer these products and have one delivered right at the comfort of your home. Very convenient, isn't it?

However, the downside is having a bed that is either too expensive or too awkward for your canine companion that you'll wish you never purchased one in the first place.

But still, you can actually arrive at a win-win solution here! If buying a dog bed is way out of your budget, then why not try making one instead? Read on the simple steps below on how to make a dog bed for your pet:

1. Have all the materials ready.

Of course, before you start making a dog bed for your pet, you have to buy all the necessary materials first. For this simple project, you have to purchase the following:

* Commercial grade foam. See to it that the foam is durable and comfortable enough for your dog.

* Fabric. Just like the foam, it should be a high-grade one, so you and your furry friend will be assured of its long-term use.

* Heavy-duty thread. It is best to choose an upholstery thread because of its sturdier quality. Remember to go for the thread color that will best complement that of the fabric. As such, never allow a visual nightmare by using a red thread on a violet fabric.

* Sewing machine. A sewing machine is important for the heavy-duty sewing that you will perform.

2. Choose a nice dog bed pattern.

After having the needed materials ready, pick a pattern that will suit your dog perfectly. You can choose from a variety of patterns, shapes, colors, and sizes: printed, striped, checkered, square, round, rectangle, dark, light, neutral, pastel, large, medium, and small.

The key here is to choose a dog bed pattern that complements your dog's personality as well as the surrounding. There are sewing and crocheting patterns available on the Internet that can help you carry out your project in a breeze. You may also opt to apply a little of your artistic creativity into the project by making your own design.

In addition, it will be a good idea if you'll solicit design ideas from your family members and friends. You may also opt to personalize your dog's bed by having its name embroidered or stitched into it.

3. Start creating your dog bed.

Of course, after preparing the materials and choosing a suitable pattern, it's time for you to begin your dog bed project. You may get family members involved in the project, particularly the kids, by asking them to perform simple tasks like handing in the stuffing materials for the dog bed. With family members and friends to help along, your dog bed project will surely be an enjoyable, fun, and meaningful activity.

Rescue Dog Training

Author: Nancy Richards

Rescue dog training is mostly the same as regular dog training with a few special considerations. Some of the considerations depend on where your dog has been obtained from and its age, but we will look at rescue dog training and what to keep in mind. Here are special considerations for rescue dog training:

1. Dogs who have been turned into shelters and rescues sometimes have training issues. Often times, the first kind of work you will do with these newly adopted dogs is to untrain the bad habits like jumping on people, chasing other animals, destructive chewing, and counter surfing. All bad habits are easily correctable!

2. Rescue dog training sometimes consists of providing a dog with things they failed to receive at an early age. For example, if a dog was not well socialized early in its life, you may spend a little extra time working through issues related to it. This should not be a deterrent to adoption but rather just something to keep in mind.

3. Older dogs can be trained, but they are not always as eager to learn. They have learned habits and are more set in their ways, so rescue dog training with an older dog will require a little more patience on the handler's part.

4. Often, rescue dog training involves working through the basic issues first like housetraining. You may adopt a four year old dog who has never been housebroken. You will need to treat this older dog just like a puppy.

5. With an adopted dog, especially if adopted from an animal control, it means you don't usually know too much about them. You won't know its likes and dislikes or what it excels at. Rescue dog training often keeps trainers on their toes trying to figure out what makes this particular dog tick.

6. One of the first things you must do with a newly adopted dog is bond. Once the dog knows he can trust you and is bonded to you, then more advanced training can progress.

7. Depending on the dog you adopt, you may have some behavioral issues that have to be worked through as part of the rescue dog training. If your dog is shy or timid, it will need to progress at a slower pace. Aggression will have to be deciphered and addressed.

8. Separation anxiety: It is not uncommon for a shelter dog to experience some separation anxiety, especially if it has had multiple homes. Rescue dog training usually involves making the new dog feel more secure in its new home, and most anxieties usually resolve themselves. Adopting a new dog from a shelter or rescue is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. Many say that the rescued dog repays you tenfold for the adoption. Don't be deterred from adopting a dog of any age because any dog can be trained. Just know that there are a few considerations for rescue dog training to keep in mind.

Is Dog Leash Training or Dog Collar Training the Best Way to Success in Your Dog Training

Fortunately, dogs are hard wired by nature to be social, pack oriented animal and to seek out leaders, and to follow the direction of those leaders.

Both dog leash training and reward training have been around for quite awhile now, and over that time they have been shown to be effective in getting the respect of the dog.

The leash and training collars for dog collar training are the most basic piece of training equipment used in dog leash training or in collar training dogs. The correct use of the lead and training collar in dog collar training is vital to any successful dog training.

Dog collar training is used to get dogs trained as fast as possible in a way that is also humane. The way a training collar is used to apply a certain amount of pressure each time that the leash is tightened. This then controls the amount of pressure placed on the training collar, and this pressure can then be adjusted according to just how the dog responds to the dog leash training.

Dog leash training is especially important in puppy training, since most dogs will not have a natural inclination to just follow by your side, but instead have a tendency to wander all over the place.

Dog leash training used when collar training dogs can represent the best way to accomplish many kinds of dog collar training programs. This is especially true in where the dog must achieve a rather high level of reliability in some situation. As an example, where dogs may have an important job to do, such as with rescue dogs, police dogs and guard dogs, dogs in these roles would greatly benefit from dog leash and collar training.

When starting dog leash training you should first purchase a sturdy and well made dog training collar, because you don't want to risk your dog breaking his collar and running away. You should also make sure that the collar fits him properly.

The length of the dog collar should be approximately two inches longer than the circumference of the dog's neck. You must use a measuring tape to accurately measure the dog's neck. To be able to get an accurate measurement, the tape should not be tight around your dog's neck.

In a collar or leash based dog leash training program, the dog is taught, at least in the beginning, a particular behavior, usually with the leash. After it is apparent the dog can show that he comprehends the particular command, the leash is then used to correct the dog when he might disobey, or when he falls short at any time. The leash is important tool when controlling and communicating with the dog in dog leash training or dog collar training.

There can be many different styles of dog training, even a different training style for every trainer. These styles even vary from dog to dog, and from breed to breed. This can make finding the one that works best for you rather challenging. The right training is important if you want to have a dog that is a talented, loyal and faithful companion for you and your family. The methods of dog training that are the most successful are those that work to strengthen the relationship between dog and handler, and therefore for a training program to be considered successful it must be able to get the respect of the dog.
